I bought it thinking it was a light accessory for travel. Granted it was silly of me to think you could read in the dark with this, but for the life of me, I can't think of a legitimate use. The effect is like light shooting out the frame of your reading glasses= only a few words are illuminated at best, and I use the word"illuminated" as an exaggeration. If you are just trying to read a map, you would do better with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. The roll part that is the only magnified part distorts the text so much not even one word is really legible.

I don't use the LightWedge, but this case is the perfect size to secure my Kindle 1 and my Kindle 2, both in covers. I have Oberon leather covers for both my Kindles, and the Kindle in the cover fits well in this case. If you keep your Kindle in your purse, backpack, picnic basket, or beach bag, this case will protect it from moisture, spills, dust or anything that might scratch your screen. Case is attractive and good quality; faux suede on the outside; soft chamois-like fabric on the inside. The light on the page looks NOTHING like it does in the photo of the product. The light is very dim and uneven. It's the unevenness that makes the page hard to read. It makes it very difficult to scan your eyes across the page to read more than a couple of words at a time. So if you're reading anything technical, you can't see an entire mathematical equation or a line of computer code all at once.



The problem might easily be solved by the company inserting a few more LEDs in the product to fill in the dark spots. But they haven't addressed this for many years and don't seem likely to.



I bought a better book light that has a fluorescent bulb. It works beautifully and illuminates the page very evenly so that I can see the whole page at a glance.

I read books at night, frequently, so I purchased this product so I wouldn't disturb my wife. This light source is simple in design: tiny LED lamps illuminate a thin piece of plastic (working similar to a fiberoptic lamp Lumisource LS-FO SPRAY Fiber Optic Spray). It is about the dimensions of a full sized book and the black handle which houses the battery/light source is somewhat bulky. A small button toggles the light intensity from low to dim to off.



USE



Place the item on the page that you want to read, push the button to the light intensity that you desire (allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, which may take a minute or more), and flip the item to the other page to read. As you turn the page, you will need to take the item out, and place it back into the book.



In concept, this product is ideal. You have a light source that is limited to the pages that you are viewing. However, even on the highest intensity (let's call it dim and dimmer), the light is still somewhat low. What can you read with this item? Books that have high contrast paper (glossy pages are most ideal since the reflective proper of the paper allows for better view). Conventional novels are a bit more difficult to read. Magazines are impossible unless you read on your stomach with the magazine placed on the bed. Furthermore, pictures are difficult to see, at best.



DURABILITY



Like any screen on a laptop, I placed a SCREEN PROTECTOR on my lightwedge to prevent scratches. Any scratch with transmit uneven light (more than usual).



Given that LEDs have very little power requirements, I have had the same batteries in the unit for the past 3 years, and it is still running.



DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS



More LED bulbs along the 'spine' of the handle would improve the light intensity.



A thinner, scratch resistant plastic with a lighter handle would be a marked improvement.



VERDICT



Knowing the limitations and tendency for scratches, it is an innovative product that still has good uses. You will need to try this product for yourself, before you can decide if it works for you.

Like some of the other folks reviewing the light wedge, I was initially excited about the product but immediately let down. The concept is great and the amount of light on the page is good. However, when I received the wedge it was loaded with dust and scratches (distracting to read through); furthermore, the dust on my wedge could not be wiped off (it was sandwiched in the plastic lens). A light wedge made slightly lighter, more comfortable to hold, and dust free would be great. All in all, I anticipated a higher quality product.

I have purchased several reading lights and always found myself either needing a brighter light, or having to adjust the position so I could read all the letters on a page. I recently discovered the lightwedge and love it. It provides light across the entire page (because it lays on top of the page) there is no adjusting of anything to get to the end of the page. Because the lightwedge lies on top of the page being read, highlighting or inserting notes is a little challenging but it can be done.

I rated this as a 4 from my perspective and experience. Not everyone may feel this positive.



The light may not directly shine into someone else's eyes, but one has to move the wedge away from the book and then back again on the next page. Inevitably this movement of pages is going to make some noise. This noise may either wake up someone or keep them awake. I use the wedge primarily when I experience insomnia and go to another room to read during the night.



The light provides plenty of illumination for me to read. However, I am one of the few people over 70 years old who does not require so-called reading glasses to read. So I am able to hold the book quite close to my eyes and there is no loss of illumination because of distance. Those who are far-sighted may have a different experience.



Yes, the device is easily scratched, but I did not find those scratches evident when I placed the wedge against the pages of a book.



The batteries do last for quite a while and I have not found them difficult to install.



I am quite happy with the device.
